As October rolls in, we are thrilled to join the world in celebrating LGBTQ History Month, a time to honor the rich and diverse history of the LGBTQ+ community. This month-long celebration serves as a reminder of the progress we’ve made, the struggles we’ve faced, and the ongoing fight for equality and inclusion.

How It All Began:

LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States in 1994 when Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed that there should be a dedicated time to educate and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s history and contributions. This concept quickly gained momentum and was embraced by educational institutions, LGBTQ+ organizations, and individuals worldwide.

Why We Celebrate It:

LGBTQ+ History Month is more than just a series of events and colorful parades. It’s a time to acknowledge the significant milestones achieved by LGBTQ+ individuals, activists, and allies. By understanding our history, we empower ourselves and inspire future generations to stand up for their rights, fostering a more inclusive and accepting world. It is essential to pay tribute to the remarkable individuals who have blazed a trail for LGBTQ+ rights and made monumental contributions to our community’s progress. Their tireless dedication, courage, and advocacy have paved the way for greater acceptance and equality. Here are just a few of the top trailblazers in the LGBTQ+ community:

 

  • Marsha P. Johnson: A transgender woman of color and a key figure in the early LGBTQ+ rights movement. Marsha was a prominent activist during the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and co-founded the Gay Liberation Front. Her work continues to inspire LGBTQ+ activists today.
  • Harvey Milk: The first openly gay elected official in California, Harvey Milk served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and was tragically assassinated in 1978. His legacy lives on as a symbol of hope and resilience.
  • Audre Lorde: An influential poet, writer, and activist, Audre Lorde explored intersectionality and advocated for the rights of Black LGBTQ+ individuals. Her work continues to inspire those fighting for social justice.
  • Sylvia Rivera: A transgender activist and co-founder of the Gay Liberation Front and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). Sylvia dedicated her life to advocating for the rights of transgender and homeless LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Bayard Rustin: A civil rights activist and advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin played a crucial role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He was openly gay, and his contributions to both the civil rights and LGBTQ+ movements are immeasurable.
  • Edie Windsor: Edie Windsor’s landmark Supreme Court case in 2013, United States v. Windsor, struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and played a pivotal role in the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States.

These trailblazers, among many others, have fearlessly pushed boundaries, challenged societal norms, and fought for the rights and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. Their legacies serve as a testament to the power of activism and the progress that can be achieved when individuals come together to create change.

 

Supporting LGBTQ+ Organizations:

There are numerous LGBTQ+ organizations that have made significant and meaningful impacts on the progress of the community. Highlighting these organizations during LGBTQ History Month can help raise awareness of their vital work. Here are some notable LGBTQ+ organizations:

  • Human Rights Campaign (HRC): HRC is one of the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organizations in the United States. They advocate for LGBTQ+ rights at the federal level, work to end discrimination, and provide resources and support to LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • GLAAD: GLAAD focuses on ensuring accurate and positive representation of LGBTQ+ people in media. They work with the entertainment industry to promote fair and inclusive portrayals of LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays): PFLAG provides support and education for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families and allies. They work to create a more inclusive and accepting society.
  • The Trevor Project: This organization is dedicated to providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth. They offer a lifeline for those in need of support.
  • National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE): NCTE advocates for policy reform and social change to advance the rights of transgender individuals. They focus on issues like healthcare access, legal protections, and social acceptance.
  • Lambda Legal: Lambda Legal is a legal advocacy organization that fights for the rights of LGBTQ+ people and those living with HIV. They take on groundbreaking cases to promote equality under the law.
  • Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF): TLDEF works to end discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people through legal advocacy and education.
  • GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network): GLSEN focuses on creating safe and inclusive schools for LGBTQ+ students. They work with educators, students, and policymakers to address issues like bullying and discrimination in schools.
  • SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders): SAGE provides services and support for LGBTQ+ older adults, addressing unique challenges faced by this demographic, such as healthcare disparities and social isolation.
  • National LGBTQ Task Force: This organization advocates for policy change and social justice for LGBTQ+ people. They organize events and campaigns to promote equality and acceptance.
  • Stonewall Community Foundation: Stonewall Community Foundation supports LGBTQ+ organizations and initiatives through grantmaking and philanthropy, helping to fund important community projects.
  • ILGA World (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association): ILGA is a global organization advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and equality around the world. They provide resources and support to LGBTQ+ activists and organizations worldwide.

An intimate discussion about their journeys, experiences and challenges in the workplace.  A very unique and one time opportunity for HR, ERG, CEO, and other business leaders to engage in conversation and gain insights that are critical to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for their LGBTQ+ employees, colleagues and clients.
